After eight years as local engagement photographers, we’ve worked with hundreds of couples planning engagement photoshoots, many of which were surprise proposals. We’ve answered every question imaginable, from selecting the best time of day to choosing locations with the right backdrop and privacy. In this guide, we’ve compiled answers to all the questions we’re asked most frequently to help you plan an engagement or surprise proposal photoshoot with confidence.

How does an engagement photoshoot work?

When it comes to engagement photoshoots, we typically offer two options. For a surprise proposal, we capture the moment discreetly, staying hidden and using a zoom lens to preserve the surprise. Once you’ve popped the question, we’ll join you to continue with the remainder of our session. Alternatively, if your partner is aware of the photoshoot, we can plan a “planned proposal” session. During this session, you can choose any moment to propose, and the rest of the shoot can be used to capture relaxed, candid engagement photos, with both of you fully aware of the camera and the experience.

Where should I propose?

Choosing the perfect proposal location is key, and many couples find that proposing at their hotel offers both convenience and a beautiful setting. A quiet section of the hotel’s private beach can be ideal for a surprise proposal, or if you prefer, you can set up a romantic scene at a local restaurant or another scenic spot offsite from the hotel. We often recommend that our clients tell their partner they’re dressing up for a nice dinner, so they’re comfortable, confident, and ready for photos without suspecting a proposal.

How does the photographer capture the proposal?

In a surprise proposal, we plan the setup carefully, choosing a location in advance and coordinating with you on exactly where you’ll stand and how you’ll approach, so nothing feels rushed or uncertain. This preparation allows us to capture the moment from a discreet distance, documenting the experience with candid, natural photos. Once the proposal is done, we’ll step forward to introduce ourselves and guide you both through a series of lightly posed shots, keeping the rest of the session relaxed so we can capture your connection authentically.

What time should I propose?

Timing matters, especially when it comes to capturing the golden hour. We typically recommend planning the proposal one hour before sunset, as this timing offers the best lighting conditions for warm, flattering photos without the harshness of midday light. Sunset times vary depending on the season, so feel free to reach out, and we’ll help you plan the exact timing to get the best light for your session.

What clothes should we wear?

For the most polished look, we advise couples to wear light, comfortable outfits that complement the beach setting. Simple dresses, linen pants, and light-colored shirts all look timeless and photograph beautifully against the natural backdrops of sand, sea, or cliffs. Neutral tones, such as whites, creams, and beiges, or soft pastel colors, work particularly well, and we recommend avoiding heavy patterns or bright, contrasting colors that may distract from the simplicity of the moment. Small accessories like hats or scarves can add a personal touch without overshadowing the photos.

We’ve never had a professional photoshoot before. How do we pose?

If you’re new to professional photography, don’t worry about posing! We’re here to offer gentle guidance throughout, helping you relax so that your connection shines through in every shot. We aim to create a comfortable atmosphere where you can feel at ease, resulting in photos that feel genuine and candid. Little by little, even the most camera-shy couples find themselves enjoying the process, and we make sure the session feels like an enjoyable experience rather than a formal photo shoot.

How many photos do we receive and when?

For a one-hour session, we deliver a gallery of 60 carefully selected and edited photos, ensuring that you receive the highest quality images that capture the highlights of your day. If you’d like a longer session, our two-hour package includes a gallery of 120 photos, all edited and curated with the same attention to detail. We deliver your photos digitally within 7 days, allowing you to relive and share the memories right away. For clients who opt for video, our in-house videographer provides an edited video, and if requested, aerial drone footage within 14 days.

Do you offer video and drone for engagements?

Adding video or drone footage is a fantastic way to bring your proposal to life. Our videography captures every aspect of the day, creating a keepsake that you can watch over and over, while drone footage adds a cinematic quality, showcasing the landscape and creating a truly unique memory. If you’re interested, let us know, and we’ll work together to create a plan that perfectly captures your engagement story.

Tips for a seamless engagement photoshoot

Planning a proposal or engagement shoot is an exciting experience, but a few extra considerations can help make the day feel effortless.

  • Check the weather: Coastal areas and outdoor locations can be unpredictable, so it’s helpful to check the forecast and plan for alternatives if needed. We’ll coordinate with you to find the best time, but bringing an umbrella or a light jacket can save the day if unexpected weather rolls in.
  • Coordinate your outfits: If you’re hoping for a polished look, it’s best to discuss wardrobe ideas with your photographer. Opt for outfits that complement each other without being too “matchy-matchy.” Avoid logos or busy patterns, which can take focus away from the emotion of the photos.
  • Bring thoughtful props: A small bouquet or a bottle of champagne can add movement and beauty to your photoshoot. However, keep props minimal to avoid distractions from the moment itself. We can help advise on items that work well in your chosen location.
  • Scout the location: While we’re here to help you choose the best spot, it can be useful to walk the hotel’s beach yourself. You might find a particular spot that feels just right for the proposal.
