Lisbon Engagement Photographer for Couples & Proposals
We’re Diego and Taylor, a husband-and-wife team and the Lisbon engagement photographers behind Chas Studios. We photograph sessions across Alfama, Chiado, Belém, Sintra, Cascais, and along the coast — working around where you’re staying, what feels right for you, and what the light is doing that day.
We direct every session, but not in the way most people expect. Most couples have never had a camera pointed at them before, so we guide you through it — where to walk, how to move, what to do with your hands — until it stops feeling like a photoshoot and starts feeling like an afternoon in Lisbon. The result looks natural and candid because we work to make it that way, not because we left it to chance. Lisbon’s light helps. Especially in the hour before sunset when it turns low and warm — that’s when everything comes together easily.
Engagement sessions move at a different pace than wedding days. No timeline pressure, no family portraits to wrangle. Just the two of you, a city you love, and enough time to actually settle in. Most couples tell us afterward they forgot we were shooting. That’s the goal.
These photos work well for save-the-dates and wedding websites, though plenty of couples book simply to have something from this time — before the wedding, in a place that matters. If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Lisbon, we can also help with positioning and timing so the moment looks exactly as it should.
Surprise Proposal Photographer in Lisbon
Planning a proposal is already a lot to coordinate — the location, the timing, making sure your partner has no idea. Adding a photographer to that equation means finding someone who can stay out of sight, read the moment without being told, and not ruin the surprise. We’ve done this enough times across Alfama, Belém, Sintra, and along the Cascais coast to know how to make it work.
We offer two approaches. The first is fully hidden: we position ourselves at a distance with a zoom lens, capture the moment as it happens, then introduce ourselves after. The second uses the photoshoot itself as the cover — your partner thinks it’s just a couples session, and the proposal happens naturally somewhere within it. Both work well; the right one depends on your partner and the location.
After the moment, we spend another 30 to 45 minutes shooting together as an engaged couple — same session, same light, while everything is still fresh.

Lisbon Engagement Photography FAQ
We’re based in Lisbon, Portugal, and often travel to surrounding areas such as Cascais and Sintra.
Our engagement photography style is natural and candid, with gentle direction to help you feel comfortable. We focus on real connection and movement rather than stiff posing, creating images that feel relaxed, refined, and true to you.
We offer engagement location guidance based on where you’re staying and the atmosphere you’re looking to create.
We provide two options: (1) Surprise photoshoot: We capture the moment hidden in the distance with a zoom lens, and then have a session with the remainder of the time. (2) Planned photoshoot: Your partner is aware of the photoshoot. At some point in the session, you can propose and then continue with the photoshoot.
We recommend having the photo session in the morning, 1-2 hours after sunrise, or in the evening, one hour before sunset. However, anytime is possible. Ask for specific times as sunrise and sunset change throughout the year.
Normally, one hour is sufficient. If it lasts longer, we can add extra time (at an additional cost).
We recommend light, comfortable beachwear. As an example, women could wear dresses and men could wear linen pants. Neutral colors always look great, such as white/cream, gray, tans, and browns, or pastel colors. Solid colors (rather than prints) allow for a clean, minimal look. Recommend accessories: hats, sunglasses, and scarves.
In one hour, we recommend a maximum of two wardrobe changes. In two hours, there can be up to 3 wardrobe changes.
We offer gentle guidance to ensure you feel comfortable while capturing a variety of poses. Our goal is for you to look natural and candid in every shot. Little by little, you will feel very comfortable in front of the camera!
For a one-hour photo session, we deliver 60 photos selected and edited. For a two-hour photo session, we deliver 120 photos selected and edited.
You will receive photos no later than 7 days after the session. Videos: maximum 14 days after the session.
For photography, we use the Canon R6 and R6 Mark II and Alien Bee lighting equipment. Lenses: 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 100mm macro 1.4. For video, we use the Sony 7 III, DJI Mavic Pro drone, Ronin RSC2 stabilizer, RODE microphones, and ZOOM H6 audio recorder.
We can remove background objects, adjust lighting, and correct aesthetics. The possibilities are endless but edits are light to maintain the natural beauty of the photograph.
As stated in our cancellation policy, we hold onto the deposit as a cancellation fee. However, you can use the deposit toward a future photoshoot without an expiration date.
We recommend that our clients look for photo inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram and share them with us. That way, we’ll know what kind of photos you like.
Yes! Our in-house videographer provides videography and aerial drone footage.
